Growing up online

Surprising Things:
1-Some teacher are going against technology and hey are getting  
2-Girls fight online
3-They got suspended
4-Some people date online
5-More dangerous stalkers on the Internet
6-The mom shared the sons info: I understand why but that was not correct. What would the sons privacy become?
7-Bullying online and then fighting on school.
8-The words become "real".That is something I had not realized.
9-Siber bullying has become greater in the internet. 
10-There are webpages for suicide and anorexia. 
11- One mom sais that adolescence is the hardest for parents and for children: most parents also sais that it is the best time of your life. 
12-Most people put provocative photos online
13-A kid commited sucicide and talked with someone who was panning it as well. 
14-Judgement is done over the internet instead than said on your face
15- Ask.fm is not shown in the video: people can get obtain lots of info from each other withought privacy.

Not surprising things:
1-Some people can't live without Internet 
2-Most kids never read;they go on spark notes
3-Way of expression
4-Way of connection 
5-Some schools have to keep up with technology 
6-Parents think that having the password would solve things: it could be like violating privacy

8-Kids close themselves to the outside world and open up tp the internet
9-On Tumblr, there are lots of people who are on "the edge" and you can connect with them and support them.

12-If internet is integrity for some, and they are not being abusive, why take it away?
13-Most sexual solicitations are not a big deal: 19 to 17 age year old teens tell each other "baby": is that a big deal?

Changed:
1-my space: most people don't use my space anymore 
2-In our school, there are no fights because of the internet.
3-If you don't know someone, you don't accept them
4-You would never give your parents or anyone your password.

6-The schools cant take over what happens on the internet because children don't speak out.
7-Parents can now learn how to use technology better.
8-Parents don't have control.
9-Parents and schools don't try to intervene that much.
10-Ask.fm can or is an easy way to bully someone and obtain info from them.
11-Today, Twitter is more common than most of the sights mentioned.
12-Today, parents have parental control as an option, but most don't choose to use it.
13-Most people don't but provocative photos because they are afraid of being judged.
14-Internet fights are less frequent (not on our school)
15-Teachers are getting more involved in technology

QUESTIONS:

What topic of the video do you identify more with?
A topic that I can identify with is the parental control. In my case, my parents what to have my Facebook and Email accouts. I have been having a hard time trying to keep them out. Personally, I consider this as violation of privacy and even though I have nothing to hide in my Facebook  I don't like my parents looking into my conversations because they could be misunderstood. I am still trying to convince them that having my password (that they dont know yet), is useless because they would be violating my personal space and limit my growth.

What are the biggest benefits of being online:
There are many benefits of being online. You can have help from your homework and save time. The internet offers illions of sources to obtain information that can contribute to better projects or works. Also, the internet can give you music, privacy, info and more. Facebook and email can let you chat with people. This can open the options of frindship and shortcuts for getting info about other people fastly. Having a shared conversation for a project, for instance, can save you time and progress.

What part of the video can I UNLIKE/UNRELATE to the most?
The suicide and the anorexia is awful. I did not know about this and it is very surprsing that people could use this. Also, having a profile on facebook or on other places for me does not show a different face. I think that creating two sides of you is wierd. Also, the bullying online has never been done to me or anyone that I know. This is not common in the school, and if it is, then I dont know about it.

There are products all ready that are "ecofreindlier" though if people stop buying them because other products are offered then the gain is cancelled out because of the rebound effect:an increase in consumption

TIME WAS UP

How can I apply sustainable consumption in my city? There are many ways to do this. For instance, I could reduce my impact by taking shorter showers and turning off electronic devices when they are not being used. I can tell my parents about what is happening and make them aware about the impact we make by using the car, for example. Recycling is another way to help the environment. Also, I can focus on my consumption of products that are not "eco-friendly".

 Sustainable consumption & production: a greener world, is an example on how to do this. There are many products that have the "eco" label. The only thing I have to do is start consuming these products. I am offered good quality and my impact will reduce greatly.  As I consume these products, I would not only be helping the company and the environment,  but I would promote the products and encourage others to buy them as well. For me, lowering my footprint is not hard, why not start now?

"Siddhartha?"

Three types of Quotations here

Quotations must be identical to the original, using a narrow segment of the source. They must match the source document word for word and must be attributed to the original author.


Paraphrasing involves putting a passage from source material into your own words. A paraphrase must also be attributed to the original source. Paraphrased material is usually shorter than the original passage, taking a somewhat broader segment of the source and condensing it slightly.

Summarizing involves putting the main idea(s) into your own words, including only the main point(s). Once again, it is necessary to attribute summarized ideas to the original source. Summaries are significantly shorter than the original and take a broad overview of the source material.


In this reading, Siddhartha looses himself. He decides to forget his old life, and leaves to the forest. Discontent about the last years sadden him and he attempts to commit suicide. "He wished passionately for oblivion, to be at rest, to be dead."(pg 70 Q) 

Siddhartha had nothing to offer the world or himself. He saw his reflection with disgust and longed to end his unworthy life.(pg 71-72 para) 

While I read this, I thought: Siddhartha has wasted his life by becoming more like normal people. He had desires and became greedy, though do these flaws leave out what he had done earlier in his life? I think that even though he lived a life of a rich man, he was not really failing by having comfort. How Siddhartha was really messing up was by letting go of who he was, to earn material things that had no value. 

When he left to the forest, he realized that. He was changed and had forgotten his ways of reflection, but was this not what showed him "Self"? 



Many teens my age can relate to this feeling of desperation. I have felt it several times. Having balance between friends, school, family and other activities can be hard and sometimes overwhelming. A perfect example of a teenage afternoon in a "school day" is seen in "Surviving Homework", an article written by Daniel Moreno. Here, you can see how a normal teen procrastinates daily. Mostly,  you find tons of different things you have to do instead of homework. You arrive home hungry and tired, so you grab a snack. Then you do several other activities that are irrelevant to avoid doing your work. Usually you finish your work by staying up late.

At this point in the night, you are tired, mad, stressed and most of us feel like we have to escape. We wish to be in another place, and to leave all of our worries behind. This thought lasts for a second and then you blame your teacher (sometimes). 

In conclusion, you waste your time doing things you don't have to do to not work. Then you regret wasting your time and wish to go back in time and do your homework first and fast. 

Siddhartha was in this point when he was planning to kill himself. He forgot to breathe and calm down. Looking at the pros and cons of his actions would have helped him, though he decides to sleep. How foolish and childish of his part. We as 9th graders eventually do what we have to and don't try to kill ourselves in order to escape it. 

Not facing your problems and mistakes leads you to stress. This feeling is not only caused by the regret of your procrastination, but also the "not solving your problems" thought. If you "escape them", they will follow you. To get rid of them, you must solve them.

Siddhartha and the Hero

In my opinion, Siddhartha becomes a hero throughout the book. At the beginning he had control of himself and had a family. Later on, he suffered and grieved to find "Self". He also experiences extravagance, adventure, pleasure and more. When he was younger, he had power over himself, though what was "himself"? He had not been in contact with pleasures of all kinds yet, so did he really have full control? What he was at that point was "Siddhartha", at his minimum of knowledge and he hadn't even started his quest. 

As the book goes on, Siddhartha experiences richness. He realizes that the more he had, the more he craved. As he craved, he became older and emptier of meaning. Siddhatha became envious of normal people. "And yet he envied them; the more he became like them, the more he envied them. He envied the one thing that he lacked and they had: the sense of importance which they lived their lives----their continual power to love." (pg 62)

At this point, he decides to leave everything and begin again. He goes to the forest and meditates. 

Jesus and Siddhartha share many similarities. At the beginning of their lives, they both new what they were going to do. Everyone thought that Siddhartha would become a god and Jesus was supposed to save man kind. They were both loved by everyone and tried to be the best example. Jesus did miracles and was followed by his disciples, as Siddhartha was accompanied by Govinda. They also had goals and wanted to accomplish them throughout their life. Both of these heroes also notice the messed up life normal people are having. Most of us work for our own benefit, not thinking about morality, or the effect our actions might have on others. Finally, Siddhartha and Jesus are not really able to love in its three forms. Siddhartha sais so several times: "You cannot love ether---."(pg 58)Jesus loves everyone equally, though the love he has is also stirred by disappointment towards our morals. Jesus can feel agape and philia, though not eros. Siddhartha has experienced eros and philia, though not agape. 

Siddhartha and Jesus also have many differences. First of, their goals are turned to opposite directions. While Jesus tries to save man kind of hatred and bad things, Siddhartha sees what we are doing and focuses on himself. He does not try to fix anyone because he knows it is impossible to change everyone. Jesus tries to spread his teaching and make people better, while Siddhartha does not believe that teachings based on personal knowledge, could change another persons way because they have not lived that experience.

Google Sites...how do you create a site, a page, customize it, add gadgets, what are gadgets, which are useful, what are some good uses for a site, sites vs blogger pros and cons.

  • How you Create the sight:
-Go to Google Sites
-Log into Google sights with your gmail address and password
-Select a template
-Name your site
-Site location: URL of your page
-Select a theme for your page
-Type the security code
-Click in create sight


In order to edit your home page, you have to look to the right hand upper corner of your screen. There you will see a pencil like symbol box. There you can edit your page just like a word dox template. 


-When you are in the home page, click on the upper right hand of your screen in a box that has a block square with a plus sign.
-Name your page: the title
-Select a template (5 types):
1. Web Page: Title, body of the page. You can add videos,table of content, images etc. (the blank template that you can start from 0 and do whatever you want with it)

3. File Cabinet: Upload and share files. Create folders and others can create them (that you add them).

HOW TEACHERS AND STUDENTS COULD USE THIS:

This is a wonderfiul way to show information in an organized way. It is "user friendly", and it will be available for more than one person. If you are going a group project, you can invite them to add or change info in your site. For a teacher Google Sites can give you the option to create a virtual class room. This will keep students and other users updated. 

Google Sites can be used for big or small purposes. It is easy, fun, and interesting.

Amongst the People

Siddhartha decides to follow Kamalas advice and goes to meet Kamaswami, a rich merchant. In order to have an affair with the courtesan, he has to "have clothes, fine clothes, and shoes and pleanty of money in his purse and presents for Kamala."  (Pg. 44) He does so by going to the merchants house and trying to become his equal. After some time, Siddhartha wore fine clothes and had everything the courtesan had instructed him to have. They finally started having an affair. 

While reading, I realized that Siddhartha and Kamala were not only similar, but had the power to control all of their senses by not loving others. They had freedom and could do what they wanted. This reminded me of a movie I saw in Global Studies called "Iron Jawed Angels". This film talks about the role woman played before and during World War 1, and how they stood up for their rights and beliefs. 

One of their leaders was Alice Paul. She dedicated her life to getting woman´s equality, and did not care about anything else, including herself. At some point in the movie, she said "When you're alone you can make any choice you want. But when someone loves you, you lose that right. I won't give anything away until we have it all. I can't". This is the idea that Siddhartha has, indirectly. He does not love, nor has any fears of not being loved. He does not expect anything from anyone, and receives what he can get from others.  

He has won his serenity by the freedom of having nothing but himself, and does not depend on the thoughts of others. "And yet, my dear, you have remained a Samana. You do not really love me-you love nobody. Is that not true?(Kamala)____"Maybe, said Siddhartha wearily. I am like you. You cannot love either, otherwise how could you practice love as an art? Perhaps people like us cannot love. Ordinary people can-that is their secret".  (Pg 59).

This page talkes about open courses that you can take involving fine arts, social sciences and others. 


This page offers a good explenation about the phychology course offered in Yale. It seemed very interestiong. The course offeres further understanding about "perception, communication, learning, memory, decision-making, religion, persuasion, love, lust, hunger, art, fiction, and dreams. " 

These lectures are also offered in audio or in video form so that you, at home can hear and learn from the course without going to class or being present.

Explo is the summer program that I will take this July. This program is amazing because it is not based on grades, but the effort and interest you have towards the course. This is really nice because you don't have the pressure to have the best grade. Instead, you can focus that energy on effort and natural interest. 

Everyone that has gone says it is a wonderful experience not only because of the wide variety of classes that are offered in many different subjects  but also having the opportunity to meet new people and create something new about yourself. Most kids say that they selected their courses according to what they were planning to be when they grew up but they ended up taking some that were not their favorite. At the end of the day they enjoyed these courses and by taking something different they don't know what to do in their life because they liked all their courses so much. 

These are some videos that can really encourage you to go. They really convinced me. There are many opportunities give there for you.

When the classes are over, you can play sports, go to the gym, travel to New York, go to musicals, or just go to conferences that can really help you later on in your life. 



Here you can gave the info you need about courses, outside of class activities, and other essential info you might need. Their options are so varied, that it is really hard to choose which ones to take.

2. Based on the results, se what jobs would interest me. None of the webpages gave me clear instructions on what path to take so I searched a way to find my path. 
3. I looked at a couple of Universities that I liked. 
- Duke University:
Located in North Carolina, Durham 
Offers a variety of classes that can expand my view of what I want to study
Reality: Thousands of applications are sent to Duke and only a few are accepted. If Duke is not my "first choice" simply because I don't know what I want yet I should move on. 
4. Due to the summer program I will attend this summer in Yale, I decided to look more in depth. By going there this July, I will have higher possibilities to apply into Yale later on.

What I would like to do is to look more into Yale since I did not have the chance this class. I think that even though it is hard to go in, I should explore it and learn what more it has to offer.
